Algebra 1
Students learn the concepts and the vocabulary associated with using variables. This course includes a review of fractions, decimals and percents; techniques for factoring and multiplying binomials; radicals and irrational numbers; and graphing. Students solve linear and quadratic equations and inequalities in one variable and study applications involving simple word problems, basic operations of scientific calculators and linear graphs by computer.
Algebra Instructor:  Linda Beaudoin
Course Highlights

The winter term project for this course concerns the design of a patio floor using a set of several different tiles or blocks. The purpose of the project is to illustrate techniques for factoring quadratic equations. The students discover that numbers of blocks which fit together in the vertical and horizontal directions corresponds to the appropriate factors of the equations they need to solve.
