Geometry

Students focus on Euclidian geometry, covering plane and solid figures. Topics include: definitions of points, lines and planes; measurement of angles and line segments; properties of circles, triangles and parallel lines; formulas for perimeter, area and volume. This course emphasizes real-life applications, word problems, and proofs of theorems and manipulation of shapes. The Geometer's Sketchpad program is used extensively throughout the course.

Prerequisite: proficiency in Algebra 1.

Geometry Instructor:  Roger Turton

Course Highlights

In this course students use the computer program Geometer’s Sketchpad throughout the course to draw and measure geometric diagrams. One of the highlights of the course comes in the winter term when students all do individual projects called tessellations with the help of the computer. These are repeating patterns of tiles that cover the entire surface of the screen with no empty spaces. Often they involve shapes of animals or people, and the best of these are displayed on the wall outside the classroom.
