Ceramics I: This study of ceramics will explore basic hand-building techniques of pinch, coil and slab by looking at the historical origins of these methods. The potter’s wheel is introduced and students master throwing basic bowl and cylinder forms. A range of decoration and glazing options are covered: slips, underglazes, sgraffito and paper resist.
Ceramics II: This course continues the hand-building skills developed in Ceramics I. Colored clay is introduced as students look at impressionistic landscapes as a theme in their work. Sculptural carved relief will be explored as a decorating technique. On the potter’s wheel, closed forms are stressed as the students become more proficient. Prerequisite: Ceramics I.
