This two-term course will cover the major periods in English literature from the English Renaissance to the present. It is intended for the student ready for the challenge presented by complex literary forms. By the end of the winter term, students will have broadened their understanding of genre and theme in literature. Texts will include works by Shakespeare, Forster, Conrad, Kingsolver, Hamid and Lahiri. Students will be asked to write personal responses, formal analyses, creative assignments, and poetry. The focus will be on drafting and revision, concentrating on the skills needed to discover an original topic, develop it through revisions, and produce a polished final paper of at least seven pages.
English 12 Honors. In addition to the curriculum described above, this honors class has an intensive focus on writing; by the end of this course, students will have produced over twenty-five pages of formal writing on various topics. They will also read Robinson Crusoe and Coetzee’s Foe in addition to the works on the English 12 list.
