The Advisory mission statement, developed jointly by students and faculty, states that “The purpose of Stoneleigh-Burnham’s advisory program is to provide a core support base at school which allows students to connect with themselves, their teachers and their peers as they build confidence, develop skills for success in school and in life, monitor their progress, and have fun.” Groups of 4-6 students meet three times each week for 20-30 minutes. Advisory meetings may focus on goal-setting, progress reports, intrapersonal and interpersonal development, preparing for student-led conferences, or simply having fun.

MOCA (“Middle School Office Caring for All”) is the Middle School student government. All Middle School students participate in MOCA where they plan events, design programs, and create policies. Every year, the students write and approve a MOCA Constitution including a mission statement, lists of rights and responsibilities, and a specific model for student leadership. MOCA also elects middle school representatives to the all-school Student Council. MOCA is actively involved in planning Founders’ Day, trips off campus, special days involving the whole school, events with local middle schools and SBS weekend activities.

The Community Service Program
requires each student to complete two hours of service every other week at an off-campus site such as the 21st Century After-School Program, the Dakin Pioneer Valley Animal Shelter, the Food Bank, and Poet’s Seat Nursing Home. Working side by side with peers and adult chaperones, the students build partnerships with each other and with their community, develop social skills, and enhance their sense of competence and connectedness.

The Athletics Program at SBS enriches the educational and personal experience of each student and helps each develop as a good athlete and a good person. Connecting with teammates and engaging in exercise on a daily basis are important parts of developing strong young women. Competitive options include riding, dance and varsity and junior varsity interscholastic teams. Non-competitive options include Recreational Skiing and major roles in the winter drama production. Middle school students may play on either the junior varsity or varsity level, as appropriate.

Upper School Clubs and Organizations are open to middle school students and include Debate and Public Speaking. For more information on clubs and organizations please contact the Admissions Office.
