Outside the Classroom
Two middle school students pose for a photo during a service project on "Spearth Day."

Whether studying in a classroom, dancing in the studio, tacking up at the barn, or just hanging out with friends, you are the same person whatever you do. At Stoneleigh-Burnham Middle School, we know and understand that, and work to be sure that what happens in one part of our program reinforces what happens in the others. Thus, we consider what goes on outside the classroom to be just as important as what happens in the classroom, be it advisory, athletics, community service, student government, or the boarding program.

Advisory: Students and faculty collaborated to write the mission statement for the Middle School Advisory: "The purpose of Stoneleigh-Burnham's advisory program is to provide a core support base at school which allows students to connect with themselves, their teachers and their peers as they build confidence, develop skills for success in school and in life, monitor their progress, and have fun."

Athletics: All middle school students participate in the athletics program alongside upper school students. Options include riding, dance, and team sports. We currently offer cross country running, volleyball and soccer in the fall, basketball, fitness, ice skating and skiing in the winter, and lacrosse, softball and tennis in the spring.

Boarding: From a cheerful "Wake-up" in the morning through the final "Good night," the middle school boarding program works to build social connections, support academic work, help students be organized, and plan weekend activities.

Community Service: Working with faculty chaperones, all students complete two hours of service every other week at one of four off-campus sites: the 21st Century After-School Program, the Dakin Pioneer Valley Animal Shelter, the Food Bank, and Poet's Seat Nursing Home.

Student Government: MOCA (Middle School Office Caring for All) includes all students and serves as the middle school student government. Students work together to plan and carry out events from charitable fund drives to social occasions to traditions such as Field Day and more. Students also work to develop ideas on how best to work together to meet their goals and manage the MOCA budget and how best to take increasing responsibility for running the organization as the year progresses.
