The study of visual arts in weaving will provide students with a fundamental understanding of the techniques of weaving on a four-harness loom. In weaving I students will become familiar with the parts of the loom, weaving terms and the tools and materials necessary to create functional and aesthetically satisfying hand-woven fabric. Students plan, weave and finish a series of hand-woven items in a course designed to develop technical proficiency and comprehension of good design principles.
Study continues moving beyond basic technical skills, students will study the structure of fabric. Courses will explore the function of proper sett and beat. Projects will cover the following weave structures: Ripsmatta or Rep weave, Boundweave, hand-manipulated lace weaves and supplementary warps. Students who work to move up in weaving courses are encouraged to apply good design principles and color theory to all projects.
