The Conservation Society at Stoneleigh-Burnham School hopes to raise awareness and educate the community about the importance of conservation, recycling, and being considerate of the school and global environment.
The SBS Conservation Society motivates the community each Winter to take part in the Green Cup Challenge, a competition with other New England Schools to see who can reduce their energy usage the most. This challenge which began three years ago with only three schools, has now grown to over include 30. The Conservation Society puts together a pledge in which students promise to make an effort in energy conservation. The community is asked to sign and stamp their green thumbs the pledge which stated:
I Pledge:
To turn off the light I leave a room.
To turn off the light in an empty room when I pass.
To unplug any unused appliances or lamps.
To use my travel much instead of paper cups.
To not use the washing machine until I have full load of laundry.
To set the dryer and check it frequently.
To keep my heat at 60 degrees or less.
To spend less time in the shower.
To turn off water while I brush my teeth.
To Conserve!
