| Students "Breaking the Silence" in 2008. |
The Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) at Stoneleigh-Burnham School provides an opportunity for all students to help foster an environment of awareness, tolerance, respect, and equality for all sexualities in the SBS community and to educate the school community on issues of sexual oppression and harassment.
Each year GSA leads the SBS community in taking part in a National Day of Silence. Students participate in the National Day of Silence in order to bring recognition to the anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender harassment that occurs in schools each year. GSA hands out cards for silent students explaining why they feel it is important to recognize Day of Silence, as well as holding an afternoon meeting talking about the impacts of being silent. Many schools across the country participate in Day of Silence, all in hopes that those who have stayed silent will be able to speak out. The 2008 Day of Silence on April 25th was held in memory of an 8th-grade California student who was shot February 12th by a classmate because of his sexual orientation.
