Welcome to the Stoneleigh-Burnham Snapshot!

Welcome to the Snapshot!

Dear Parents,

For those of you new to the school, Snapshot is our electronic newsletter that comes out every other week. Our goal is to share with you information about what has happened or what is about to happen at the school. We welcome suggestions! If you are a middle school parent, you will notice that more detailed information is sent on a regular basis about our middle school program.

On behalf of the faculty and staff, I'd like to thank all of you for helping us with an incredibly smooth transition into the school year. There is such a positive air and energy that we are hoping to simply build on the momentum of these first few weeks. Hard to believe, but we are already looking forward to welcoming you back for Family Weekend on October 22nd!

With appreciation,

Sally Mixsell

SBS Opens the 2010-2011 School Year

Tuesday, September 14, Stoneleigh-Burnham School opened the 2010-2011 academic year with Convocation. Invocation by alumna Reverend Shayna Appel ('78, P '04) was followed by a welcome from Head of School Sally Mixsell ('69), who remarked that each student had a new year in which to be her best self.

The School is pleased to announce that for the first time since its founding seven years ago, the Middle School is at capacity with 32 students! This year, we have a total student body of 140 students, our highest attendance in five years. Girls from 14 countries and 11 American states are represented.

Academic Dean Natalie Demers also celebrated the global community at SBS and reinforced the power of education. Senior Courtney McKnight encouraged students to take advantage of all of the opportunities at SBS, and to get "outside your comfort zone." Dean of Students John Larson reinforced the mission of SBS, asking girls to identify what honor, respect and intellectual curiosity mean to them.

Finally, Student Council President Seung Yun (Theresa) Oh gave a speech on her understanding of the Honor Code. The Code itself was then read aloud by Student Council Vice President Marissa (Rissy) Dowrey. All students, faculty and staff signed the Honor Code and the ceremony came to a close with a benediction by Reverend Appel, who encouraged all attendees to recognize their individual challenges this year and be willing to take new and creative approaches to reach their goals.

Spring Break Trip to Spain & France

Spanish teacher Jessica Durfey and French teacher Miriam Przybyla-Baum (with additional chaperone history teacher Karen Levitt) will be hosting a student trip to Spain and France March 5-12, 2011. All students are welcome regardless of language ability!

Deposits of $500 will be accepted through Fall Family Weekend to secure your daughter's spot on this exciting trip. Total cost will be under $3,000, which will cover all expenses except lunches.

Bonding Trips Were a Great Success!

On September 15, each grade went on different bonding trips to get to know each other better. The weather was beautiful and everyone had fun!

The Middle School continued its tradition of taking an overnight trip to Camp Becket. From the opening games through the campfire and impromptu talent show and the massive sleepover in a large common room, to the high ropes course and small group "Zinger" challenges, the middle school students had fun getting to know each other and beginning to learn how they best work together.

9th graders went to Road's End Farm where they fed over 60 horses that live there, played games in the field, took a walk around the land, hung out and got to know each other. 10th graders traveled to Boston, where they were challenged to a scavenger hunt on the Freedom Trail. 11th graders spent a challenging day on a ropes course in Brattleboro at "High Five Adventures." 12th graders joined in a leadership workshop and then took a float trip together in Charlemont.

When is Mountain Day?

The date of Mountatin Day is a carefully guarded secret, but it is generally a weekday during fall term. The announcement will be made to seniors and day parents the night before. On Mountain Day, classes are cancelled and Big Sisters wake up their Little Sisters and treat them to breakfast at a local restaurant. Following the breakfast festivities, the entire SBS community travels to a nearby mountain for a day of hiking, activities, enjoying lunch and having fun together.
