Students Attend Lecture at Smith College

On September 29, Director of Counseling Ellen Carter and art teacher Sara Gibbons accompanied five students (Quincy, Asma, Katie, Jane and Emily) to a lecture at Smith College by author Rachel Simmons entitled: "How Nice is Too Nice? Leadership in a Gendered World." Rachel Simmons is the author of The Curse of The Good Girl and Odd Girl Out. Additionally, Ms. Simmons is the co-founder of the Girls Leadership Institute, serving as a consultant to schools and organizations around the world.

Ms. Simmons spoke of expanding the notion of girls' / women's leadership and encouraging young women to lead in an "authentic" manner. It was exciting to have the opportunity to be on the Smith College Campus and be inspired by a speaker who travels the world addressing bullying and how best to empower girls. We look forward to the next lecture opportunity at Smith and encourage students to sign up soon!

New Australian Exchange Program!

In an effort to further our goal of offering a global perspective, SBS is embarking on an exciting new venture. We have entered into an exchange program agreement with St. Hilda’s School in the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia! St. Hilda’s is a K-12 Anglican girl’s school. The exchange program will be available for girls in 10th grade only (SBS girls who will have just finished their grade ten) for six weeks.

St. Hilda's girls will visit us from the beginning to midterm of the spring trimester. Our girls will visit them from the beginning of July until the middle of August. SBS students will not miss any classes. In fact, the first week of July is the last week of St. Hilda's vacation, so girls who embark on this adventure would be able to spend the first week sightseeing before they go to class (think Great Barrier Reef!). SBS girls would most likely stay in homes because St. Hilda’s has a large day student population. However, a dormitory experience is also an option.

There will be no cost to any students to attend either school. However, families will be responsible for travel costs, insurance (most families opt for traveler’s insurance) and spending money. Travel between countries will be facilitated by tourist visas. Students are expected to attend classes, participate in all the activities, homework, lessons, etc. for each class and otherwise be good additions to their classes. There will not be any formal assessments, grades or credits issued, but there will be progress reports.

If you are planning to visit us on Family Weekend, you can hear more about this opportunity during Housemeeting. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and hear more details. Please contact Andrea Patt , International Program Director, for more information. We hope to see our first Australian visitors this spring!

French Classes Enjoy Film Festival

On October 12, students in French III and IV/V went to see Le Fils de L'épicier (The Grocer's Son), a French film by Eric Guirado, at the Amherst Cinema. This is one of five films in the Tournées Film Festival which is organized by Holyoke Community College and sponsored by the French Embassy and the French Ministry of Culture, among others.

Why the PSAT?

With PSAT day tomorrow, October 16, for all 10th and 11th graders, here is some information on why we have the students take this test.

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) is a rigorous, national assessment that measures critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills.

The results of the PSAT are not given to colleges; this information is for students and parents to use in gauging test strengths and challenges. Students will receive their scored answer sheets and test books so they can review all the questions and answers. Taking the PSAT gives students an opportunity to experience a standardized test in a comfortable setting. Students with exceptionally high scores may qualify for scholarships.

For more information on the PSAT, please go to CollegeBoard.com
