For any regular public radio listener, Friday mornings often take a tearful pause when the weekly segment of StoryCorps is broadcast. The independent nonprofit project, whose mission it is to honor and celebrate one another's lives through listening, has been partnered with National Public Radio since 2003 and this year has declared Friday, November 28th (the day after Thanksgiving) the first annual National Day of Listening.
StoryCorps founder Dave Isay has asked that, "This holiday season, ask the people around you about their lives. By listening to their stories, you will be telling them that they matter and they won't ever be forgotten." The StoryCorps website offers tools for conducting interviews of family members and friends as well as a downloadable Do-It-Yourself Guide.
The Stoneleigh-Burnham Alumnae Office has been collecting video and audiotaped oral history interviews of alumnae during Reunion Weekend for the last two years and plans to expand the oral history project to include interviews with students, faculty and staff. On Thursday, November 20th, Director of Communications Holly Mott and Academic Dean Natalie Demers recorded an interview at Greenfield Community College as part of StoryCorps' Western Massachusetts tour. The 40-minute interview will be archived at the Library of Congress and focuses on Ms. Demers' childhood growing up in South Africa and attending an all-girls school and how her early life has influenced her passion for learning. Click here to read coverage of the StoryCorps session as reported in The Recorder.
Enjoy time with friends and family this holiday season and consider starting a new holiday tradition by recording a conversation with someone important to you.

This season, fashion designer Debbie Kates (daughter Mia Anthony ’12) will have two Pioneer Valley shows. The first is a private show at her home this Saturday.
This is the first local show of the season, so there will be lots of one-of-a-kind pieces, baskets full of hats, headbands, scarves and neck warmers, and racks of jackets and yoga/ski skirts. Debbie has been mixing a lot of her signature Velboa* with vintage finds to get some cool modern looks as well as continuing to experiment with supple performance fabrics. And while they aren't ready yet, she would love to show you what she is starting to do with old cashmere sweaters.
* Velboa is a beautiful fabric that feels amazing next to your skin. It wicks, is machine washable and dryable, and will never pill. Functions well out on the trail, looks great out on the town.
Please come to see Debbie Kates' 2009 winter collection.
When: Saturday, November 29 - The Saturday after Thanksgiving
12:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Where: 23 Chestnut Hill, Greenfield, MA
Your friends are welcome
Debbie Kates will also be at the Northampton Craft Fair on
Saturday and Sunday, December 6 + 7 @ Northampton High School
