SBS Celebrates Spearth Day

While the rain may have dampened Thursday, May 14, students were still full of energy and excited to celebrate Spearth Day 2009. The morning was full of community service opportunities both on and off campus. In the afternoon, students enjoyed the talent show, snacks and games, including "Dunk Your Favorite Administrator." The highlight of the afternoon was the distribution of the 2009 yearbooks.

SBS Parent Fund

Dear SBS Parents,

As the academic year builds to its natural crescendo, I am sure you are reflecting on how your daughter’s year has gone. Is she a strong learner? Is her confidence intact? Is she curious, friendly and caring? How has she been prepared to navigate challenging times?

What a remarkable time of change and growth we’ve seen this year, four our students and indeed, for Stoneleigh-Burnham School. As we celebrate the School’s 140th anniversary with great pride and optimism, we are ebullient with enthusiasm for the course we are charting into the near and distant future, even despite the economic challenges that face our entire world.

SBS Partners with Deerfield Academy for IISPSC

Deerfield Academy will host the 28th annual International Independent Schools' Public Speaking Competition (IISPSC) next October 1-4, 2009. Stoneleigh-Burnham School has agreed to partner with Deerfield to organize the event, one of the most well respected English speaking independent school competitions in the world.

As a host school for one of the World Tournament’s qualifying public speaking events, Stoneleigh-Burnham has been invited to compete in the IISPSC this fall, and three of our students will compete in the tournament.

Deerfield is expecting approximately 150 students and 50 coaches to attend from 60 schools. Schools that are invited and likely to attend include Andover, Exeter, Hotchkiss, Roxbury Latin, Wellington College (UK), Kings Academy (Jordan), Eton College (UK), and St. Paul's. Additionally, two dozen of the top Canadian schools, as well as schools from Bermuda, Cyprus and England will be invited. Finally we hope that schools from Peru, Turkey, and Hong Kong will consider attending.

SBS Summer Programs

Stoneleigh-Burnham School is proud to continue the great work we do throughout the school year by offering a number of summer programs. All programs are residential and directed by current SBS faculty and staff. We offer programs in riding, dance, debate, softball and academic review. Below is a brief description of each program:

  • Bonnie Castle Riding Camp – a two-week camp for girls ages 9-16. Participants ride twice daily, take an equine studies class and participate in other activities which vary by session including arts and crafts, dance, tennis and softball.
  • Sorvino Dance Intensive – a week-long dance intensive designed for intermediate to advanced dancers between the ages of 11-17. Dancers will take part in classes for ballet, modern, jazz and West African, with optional classes in tap and pointe. In addition, participants spend one night at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Becket, MA.
  • A Voice of Her Own – a public speaking and debate experience designed for girls ages 11-17. This program can help the accomplished debater hone skills and improve her delivery, and can take the most novice speaker and help build confidence in the strength of her voice.
