Fall Season Kicks Off at SBS

The fall athletic season kicked off Wednesday with two home soccer games against Vermont Academy and, for the first time in SBS history, two fall volleyball games at Wilbraham & Monson. This first for SBS volleyball is because volleyball has traditionally been played in the winter season. This year Stoneleigh-Burnham joined its peer schools in moving volleyball to the fall season. All teams were excited to get things going and look forward to a fun, fall season.

Do you know a Stoneleigh-Burnham Girl?

The Admissions team has started its search for next year's students. This fall Andrea Patt, Laura Lavallee, Matt Fisher, and Eric Swartzentruber will attend fairs, visit schools, and even travel entirely around the globe looking for the next Stoneleigh-Burnham girl. (For details click here.) But the next Stoneleigh-Burnham girl might actually be right next door. Perhaps you can think of a friend of your daughter's - someone she rides with, a girl in her church, temple, or mosque, or a neighbor or friend. If you know a girl who loves to learn and who would benefit from an experience like your daughter's, let me encourage you to bring her and her parents to an upcoming Open House - or let us know and we'll invite them!

Debate and Public Speaking Off and Running

The Debate and Public Speaking Society is starting the year with a bang with two major tournaments on back-to-back weekends. Stoneleigh-Burnham hosts its annual Public Speaking Tournament this weekend, Sunday, September 27th. Three SBS students will compete with New England's best and brightest schools to qualify for the World tournament to be held in Lithuania in the spring of 2010. They are Bryna Cofrin-Shaw '10, Sophie Dorsch '10 and Kat Bordewieck '10.

Then, October 1st through the 4th, these students will compete at Deerfield Academy in the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Championships (IISPSC). Also a qualifier for the World tournament, the IISPSC is being held in the US this year for the first time in the tournament's history.

College Visits on Campus

This fall is a busy one at SBS for the college visits that happen right here on campus! Seniors are encouraged to attend these short meetings with admissions representatives to learn about some wonderful colleges and introduce themselves to the people who will read their applications. Please encourage your daughters to attend these meetings if they have even a slight interest in the school, or are encouraged to visit by the college counselor Lauren Cunniffe. Seniors may be excused from class as long as they check in with their teachers to be sure they are not missing a major commitment. Juniors may attend these sessions only if they have no class or other commitment.

The schedule for the week of September 28-October 1:

9/28 Maine College of Art
9/28 Long Island University, C.W. Post
9/29 Goucher College
9/30 College of Wooster
10/1 Stonehill College
10/1 Muhlenberg College

Contact Lauren Cunniffe for more information.

Days of Champions

Stoneleigh-Burnham has five students competing in the 2009 Massachusetts Horsemen's Council Days of Champions finals this weekend in Northampton, Massachusetts. It is an exceptional accomplishment to have five qualifying riders in the finals this year. The students have worked very hard all year to qualify for this prestigious horse show.

Stoneleigh-Burnham's competing qualifying riders are Mikaela DeGroote '12, Tess Reed '12, Rachel Gledhill '13, Kelly Siok '11 and Hannah Reynolds '12. Alissa Ames '14 qualified for the Mini-Medal Division but will not be competing. Tess, Kelly and Mikaela compete Saturday in the Junior Division of the Massachusetts Medal Finals against the 152 best riders in Massachusetts. Rachel and Hannah compete Sunday in the Mini-Medal Division of the Massachusetts Medal Finals.

Book-in-Common

Last year's middle school parents asked that we read a book in common this year. For Fall Family Weekend, we will echo choices from the summer reading the faculty did and offer parents (upper and middle schools) the choice between reading The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine and A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink. Interested parents may purchase either book, and will have the chance to participate in a jigsaw discussion to share ideas first with other people who read the same book, and then with people who read a different book.

If you have any questions, please contact Bill Ivey.

When is Mountain Day?

It begins with a whisper on the eve of Mountain Day. Seniors are secretly told that the next day will be Mountain Day and they busily (but quietly!) begin planning for the big day! Mountain Day is a Stoneleigh-Burnham tradition about leaving the daily routine behind and appreciating the autumn season in New England. The Head of School cancels classes and the entire community travels to a nearby mountain for a day of hiking, activities, a barbeque luncheon and outdoor fun. On the morning of Mountain Day, Big Sisters wake their Little Sisters and treat them to breakfast at a local restaurant.

Mountain Day is most commonly on a weekday in the fall. The date is a carefully guarded secret, but the announcement will be made to seniors and day parents the night before.
