News From the College Counseling Office

College visits at SBS have finished up for the year as admissions offices begin reading applications across the country. We had several dozen college representatives visit us: we welcomed visitors from George Washington University, Mount Holyoke College, Carnegie Mellon University, Northeastern University, Albion College, University of Richmond, Savannah College of Art and Design and Roger Williams University to name just a few. Seniors who did not apply Early Decision now must turn their full attention to meeting with Lauren Cunniffe to finalize a list and finish up applications. Many schools have early January deadlines so it's very important to use the Thanksgiving break to get this work done and not wait until the end of December!

Juniors will begin the college process during Forum time with Lauren this winter to complete some surveys and start work on developing a preliminary college list. The surveys will help them think about what sort of college might be the best fit for them in terms of size, location, programs, sports and activities. A preliminary college list will encourage your daughters to start doing some focused research on what various colleges have to offer her and whether her academic record is a good match for the college's requirements. With several thousand colleges and universities in the United States, there are excellent colleges out there for every student. We look forward to working closely with students and families to find the best options for your daughters.

Smith College Admissions Director Speaks

On Tuesday, November 10 Smith College Director of Admissions Debra Shaver spoke to members of the SBS Parents' Association about the college admissions process. Debra brought her 25 years of college admissions expertise as well as her own personal experience helping her son with the process to the engaging presentation. Her talk was videotaped and has been uploaded to the SBS YouTube channel for you all to view at your convenience. Among some of the topics covered in Debra's presentation were: the role of the parent in the college admissions process, the importance of "the right fit" when looking for a college, college visits, the value of AP and IB on a high school transcript, and more.

The video is available in five parts. To find the Stoneleigh-Burnham YouTube channel go to http://www.youtube.com/StoneleighBurnham

Fall All-Stars
Three SBS students were selected to represent the school at fall all-star games. Kim Balk '10 played in the NEPSAC Volleyball All-Star game Sunday, November 8th at Worcester Academy. Bryna Cofrin-Shaw '10 and Elisabeth Galluzzo '12 played in the WWNEPSA Soccer All-Star game Sunday, November 15th at Westminster School.

Congratulations to these outstanding athletes on their accomplishments!

Athlete of the Week
Week of 11/10 Mikaela DeGroote '12
A new star has emerged on the IEA team and while she has been riding for several years she has recently conquered a difficult task as an equestrian. Moving between a jumper style horse and a love of jumpers, Mikaela has quietly and efficiently conquered the equitation world. Placing 2nd on the flat last weekend at the SBS IEA show and this past weekend placing 3rd over fences on a LARGE horse (for a rider with a petite stature this is a big accomplishment) she has shown her coaches she really is a "team" rider.

Week of 11/3 Theresa Oung '12
Theresa has worked hard both in and out of practice. Her dedication to the sport has helped both her and her teammates improve. She is always putting forth her best effort and it shows in her improvement this season. In a most recent match against Westover, she was complimented by the referee on her excellent playing.
