Spring Arrives at SBS - Just Ask the Bloggers!

Although it may be a bit earlier than usual, the SBS campus was happy to welcome back warmer weather while the students were away on spring break. Students returned on Tuesday, March 23rd to find the softball diamond just about ready for games, spring flowers blooming and a new spring trimester schedule in their mailboxes.

Spring brings many traditions to the Stoneleigh-Burnham campus and two of the school's bloggers have taken the time recently to reflect on just what happens during spring at SBS.

Check out the Stoneleigh-Burnham Blog and Laura Lavallee's - Admissions Office Blog.

New Faces This Spring

As many of you know, our beloved Science Department Chair Beth Stinchfield had to schedule some knee surgery over Spring Break and will not be able to return until the fall. Beth is now at home and is doing very well on her path to recovery!

Because Beth has her hands in so many SBS pies, we have several different people covering her responsibilities. Darcy Albanese is teaching Beth’s 3 Biology sections. Darcy has recently finished her master’s degree in education, with a teaching license in Biology. Her previous work was in pediatric dentistry. Among other accomplishments in that field, Darcy did her residency and taught at the Columbia University Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Darcy’s association with us will not end in June; her daughter Leanna will be joining our 7th grade in the fall!

We are equally fortunate to have Melissa Malandrinos ’04 come on board to teach Beth’s Equine Studies and Botany classes. Melissa has recently moved back to this area and is in the process of attaining a farrier’s license. She is a longtime equestrian and was a Biology major in college. Of course, the return to SBS for Melissa is an easy move, and we are so glad that the timing of this appointment worked out.

Please join me in making Darcy and Melissa feel welcome at SBS!

Bassett Classic Softball Challenge

Parents are invited to join students, alumnae, faculty and the SBS softball team for a friendly softball game on Saturday, April 17 at 4:00 p.m. The Bassett Classic was established in the spring of 2007 to honor the achievements and contributions of Dr. Paul Bassett as long-time softball coach at Stoneleigh-Burnham. The tradition continues and we would like to extend an invitation to all parents. No experience required! Bring a glove if you have one… if you don’t have one, we will share!

Busy Weekend for SBS Riders

IEA Team Heads to Zone Finals

This is an important weekend for the Stoneleigh-Burnham Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) Team. They will travel to Zone Finals at Mount Holyoke College early on Saturday morning where the top 12 out of 50 teams in Zone One are competing. From there, the team will need to place in the top four in order to continue on to the IEA National Championships being held April 22 - 25, in Conyers, GA. The SBS IEA team has ridden at every National Finals since 2000 when the school's team was founded. Last year Stoneleigh-Burnham was the only prep school from New England to travel to Nationals and finished 9th in the country - their highest placing in the past five years. Needless to say,  the IEA team has a busy and challenging weekend ahead!

Kelly Siok '12, Callan Franchi '11, Rachel Gledhill '13 and Paige Koning '13 will represent the team this weekend. Good Luck Girls!

Dressage Show at SBS Equestrian Center

This Saturday, May 27, SBS will host a dressage show in the equestrian center. Many SBS students will be riding including: Julia Short '11, May Dong '14, Franny Eremeeva '15, Leira Feves '14, Sophie Dorsch '10, Alissa Ames '14 and Mikaela DeGroote '12.  Come down and cheer them on!

Spring Sports Kick Off at SBS

Spring sports have begun at SBS! With the snow melted, the teams are just waiting for the fields to dry. We have healthy numbers in all areas, including two softball teams, one good size lacrosse team, and two tennis groups, along with the dancers and riders.

Games begin Saturday, April 3rd, so check out the weekly schedule here
