SBS Students Help Ring in Lunar New Year |
The International Student Club along with Mrs. Patt, Director of International Programs, welcomed everyone to the Lunar New Year celebration at Housemeeting on Tuesday, February 23.
The Lunar New Year is celebrated from February 14 - February 28, beginning with the new moon and ending with the full moon. According to the Chinese zodiac, this is the Year of the Tiger. Several students and faculty wore traditional Chinese clothing at the event. There were games and traditional Chinese art & cooking activities available for everyone. This is a time of year in Asian culture when young people show appreciation and respect for their elders.

The Snow Day That Wasn't |

From Bill Ivey, SBS Middle School Dean's Blog -
The early morning light attempting to pry my eyes open seems somehow different, a penetrating greenish blue. Suddenly the truth hits me and I snap up in bed and look out my window. In the very early morning light, the layer of snow on the roof over the kitchen looks thicker than it has been in ages. I glance at my clock and notice it’s 6:15. I usually leave by 6:40. No time for a shower; I shave, dress and pack my things and am outside in less than 10 minutes. Only one side of the street has been plowed – my side, as it happens, and I work to break up and move large, heavy chunks of wet snow from the end of the driveway, musing on the fact that my local school district – and probably most other public schools – has no doubt cancelled classes. Throwing the shovel in the back of the car before leaving, since my driveway will probably be plowed in again on my return, I text my son and call my wife to say “Good morning!” Half a mile from home, a car heading uphill has gotten stuck smack in the middle of the railroad tracks. This is not a Good Omen. Click here to read the full post and check out all of Bill Ivey's entries. |

A great variety of summer program brochures are on display in the College Counseling Resource & Visit Room at SBS. Programs include precollege academic classes, art, dance or theatre camps, travel opportunities, service and adventure programs and many others. Encourage your daughter to look through the offerings!
Juniors are starting to meet as a group with their College Counselor, Lauren Cunniffe, to get an overview of the college application process, register for upcoming ACT and SAT tests, and develop a preliminary college list. Your daughter will receive a preliminary list of colleges to consider before break begins. Please remember that this list will certainly evolve over the next few months (colleges added and removed) as you discuss college plans as a family and your daughter starts to identify schools that are a good fit. Please encourage your daughter to do some research on any schools that interest her, from looking at college websites to going on visits during spring break. |
