Speakers Challenge Students to Understand Conflict and Peace

The Miriam Emerson Peters Speaker Series in Global Awareness held its third and final public lecture of the 2009-10 series on Thursday, April 8 at 11:30 a.m. in the Geissler Gallery.  Yaron Prywes and Naira Musallam, doctoral candidates in Social Organizational Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University, spoke to students and faculty on assumptions about peace and conflict and shared ways of understanding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Naira and Yaron spent the day visiting classrooms in both the middle and upper school and were also able to enjoy lunch in the dining hall.

SBS Honors Dining Services

In an effort to acknowledge and thank staff members this year, we would like to focus this week on all those who work in Dining Services as they prepare for a rollicking week of Family Weekend and the Auction. Director Mike Phelps and his crew do a spectacular job providing us all with healthy and inventive menus, a clean and accessible dining room, as well as friendly faces and accommodating minds. Mike, who was previously director here, left for awhile to try his hand in the restaurant business. He and his wife Joan still own Stillwaters Restaurant on Route 2 and open it now for special events and holidays. When the economy made it difficult to sustain a restaurant full-time, Mike found that SBS was seeking a director again – serendipity for both parties! Mike has been back for about eighteen months, and we couldn’t be happier. Among all his other talents, he is the creator of the bread horses you see on special occasions here!

Helping Mike do this good work are three fine chefs. Bill Pachalis, who joined us last year, cooks most of the lunches we eat while Linda, here for three years, comes up with ideas for most of our dinners – and cooks them. Linda lovingly plays grandma to all the girls and the SBS babies as well. Souk Chanthavong, who also came on board last year, is ever-present on weekends making cooked-to-order omelettes and overseeing all the brunch options. Of course, there are others who play a big role, too.

Aya Brown is the artistic genius behind our daily salads, Asian options and the “ Kitchen Crew” poster in the Red Room (check out http://www.opertura.org/ to see Aya’s “real” art!). Aya came to us about a year ago, as did Brian Heath who goes about his business of cleaning the dining hall so quietly you hardly know he’s here. However, it’s hard to imagine what the dining hall would look like without his care and attention! Similarly, Terri Batchelder, a three year veteran, counts heads in the morning and does all the dishes morning and noon; we can’t do without her!

Though these are the longer-tenured individuals, there are quite a few other part-timers and newer employees who help out with dishwashing and cleaning: Stacia Hogan, who preceded Brian Heath but now chooses to work part-time, Antonio Pantoja, Jose Manabat, Gabrielle Remillard and Robert Rogers.

Here’s to all of you who take such good care of us, making sure that our daily sustenance is what it should be!!

SBS Students Represent The School at State House

On Friday, April 9, Rissy Dowrey '11 and Jane Lee '11 (as part of their SBS AP US History class) will represent Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Annual Student Government Day being held at the State House in Boston. This 63 year old event sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education encourages high school students from around Massachusetts to participate in a recreation of a day in the life of a government official. Both Rissy and Jane will be acting as Representatives to the general assembly where they have been asked to prepare for a debate on two current state bills: House Bill No. 3152: An Act Relative To Cell Phone Use in Motor Vehicles and Senate Bill No. 219: An Act Authorizing a Study of School Starting Times and Schedules. The days activities also include an orientation to the state legislative process as well as speeches by prominent officials.

Poetry Month Begins at SBS

SBS celebrates National Poetry Month with several annual traditions, beginning with the Golden Ticket. Hidden around the school each class day in April is a poem written on a sheet of golden paper. The lucky finder of the hidden poem must share it with the school, and then she wins a little (sweet) treat.

Students are also invited to submit poems for the poetry contest, and the winner and runner-ups read their poems at the Poetry Festival. This year's poetry festival will be on April 22nd, beginning at 7:00 pm, and will feature poet and teacher John Hennessy.

For more information on guest poet John Hennessy click here.

Hats off to the Phonathon Fiesta 2010!

Every year, SBS students gain valuable volunteer experience by making calls to encourage alumnae participation and giving. The phones are festive throughout the month of April as students experience the power of philanthropy and get to know alumnae across the country.

A strong Alumnae Fund and Parent Fund are essential for bridging the gap between tuition income and the actual cost of an independent school education. Thank you to last nights’ student Phonathon Fiesta volunteers:
Jessica Gale ’11, Monee Neal’12, Lina Um’13, Kethrellen Peterson’14, Yasmin Baksh’15, Frany Eremeeva’15, Jordyn Pigott’15 and Maah Otchere’15.

Please note the following Phonathon Fiesta Dates:
Sunday, April 11 2pm-5pm
Sunday, April 25 2pm-5pm
*Wednesday, April 28th 6-7pm (special fiesta!)
