Dear Parents,

Many thanks to those of you who were able to attend Family Weekend! We had approximately 70 families on campus which was wonderful, especially given the late start to the year we had in September. For those unable to be with us - largely those from farthest away - we missed you but certainly understand why it is difficult to return to Greenfield after most of you came just last month. Please feel free to contact your daughter's advisor if you have any questions about her work here at SBS.

For those of you who were here on campus, it was tremendously gratifying to hear your impressions of the year so far, to see you attending the performance, our athletic games and the horse show, and to have you join us for some of the informational meetings we offered. A wonderful weekend, all around! Thank you for making the effort to be here!

As some of you know, we have scheduled Spring Family Weekend for the few days before Easter. While this isn't usual, the pacing of this year is such that it was the best weekend relative to grading, proximity to the end of spring break and the day of graduation, and so on. The thinking was that families could come on campus Friday and Saturday and then have their daughters with them for Easter Sunday; we also allotted the following Monday and Tuesday off to allow for some good downtime together. However, we did not realize at the time that the Parents Association was planning a fun dinner dance for families the Friday night of Spring Family Weekend - Good Friday. This causes a considerable conflict for some. We could conceivably move the weekend to April 29-30; it is 5 weeks from graduation and the weekend before AP exams begin. We would likely not be able to have as many games on campus.

I mentioned this dilemma at the "Head's Address" last weekend and got some conflicting responses so I would ask that all of you go to this link and share your opinion. This is a quick survey that will take moments to complete. It is, after all, your weekend, and we want to accommodate as many as possible. I would like to make a definitive decision by the end of next week. and will communicate a decision asap.

My thanks to all of you!

France/Spain Trip Update

The deadline for deposits for the France/Spain trip has now passed. Thank you to all who signed up.

Students can still join the trip as late as December 15th, when the balance is due. However, their participation will not count towards decreasing the trip cost for participants.

New Speaker Series

We are embarking on our second year of the Miriam Emerson Peters Speaker Series in Global Awareness. Last year we hosted Dr. Mary Wilson from the University of Massachusetts who spoke about Middle Eastern culture, religion and history. Next were Don and Sally Goodrich of the Goodrich Foundation, founded in memory of their son who was on United Airlines Flight 175 on 9/11. Don and Sally are currently involved in furthering education for girls in Afghanistan and brought the brother of a student here to join them in talking about Afghanistan. Finally, we heard Israeli Yaron Prywes and Palestinian Naira Musallam, who spoke about conflict resolution in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. We were thrilled and gratified at the success of this inaugural program last year.

This year, we begin with two speakers, both professors at Bentley University. Dr. Zheng, Shiping is a full professor of Political Science in the Global Studies Department. Dr. Zheng’s research interests include Globalization, U.S.-China relations, East Asian Political Economy and Chinese politics and foreign policy. Dr. Zheng has been traveling in China but will be in the area in November and has agreed to join us. He will be accompanied by Dr. John Watt, professor, author and expert on Chinese history and culture. Dr. Watt has written and published The District Magistrate in Late Imperial China, among other publications. Dr. Watt will speak on "China as a Civilization: Past and Present" and Dr. Zheng will then present "The Rise of China: Opportunities and Challenges."  Dr. Zheng and Dr. Watt are friends and colleagues who often work and speak together. This evening promises to be both entertaining and informative. Please join us at 6:45pm on Thursday, November 11, if you can.

Later in the winter, we will host Elayne Clift, award winning writer and journalist who has published widely on women and gender concerns, international development and health and social issues. In addition to holding adjunct faculty positions in several New England Colleges and Universities, she has also taught in Thailand. In the spring we will bring to campus Christine Shelton, professor in the Exercise and Sport Studies Department at Smith College, who will speak about her work with international sport organizations that help to network and develop leadership opportunities for women and sport.

These talks are all free and open to the public as well. We hope to see many of you there!
