Join Us for a Bhangra/Bollywood Dance Party! |
Saturday, May 7th at 4:00 p.m. in Emerson Hall, the Community Dance program will present "Bhangra/Bollywood Dance Party"! The performance is free and open to the public.
All the dances presented, choreographed by Ann Sorvino, Performing Arts Chair, will be in the style created for the Indian film industry. For those who have seen Slumdog Millionaire, this presentation will be reminiscent of the final dance scene of the movie. Bhangra is a secular farmer's dance, first performed by men in the Punjab region of India. The enormous Indian film industry, founded originally in Bombay, began to blend that traditional movement into their Hollywood style movie musicals. Traditional Indian music and dance steps are mashed up with pop and hip hop movement styles found in the West resulting in an energetic and entertaining movement experience.
Performing will be 30 local children who attend the Community Dance program, dancers from the school’s dance department and 15 dancers from the Greenfield Community College Dance Department. The afternoon performance is sure to be fast-paced, artistic and entertaining. Please join us for this cultural exploration into one of India’s most popular exports. |

Sophomore/7th Grade Poetry Project |
"No ladders, no descending angels, no voice out of the whirlwind..." Rachel, Anna, and Chelsea combined to read Carolyn Miller's poem "The World as It Is." In a PowerPoint, they analyzed the meaning of the poem, paying close attention to some of the poetic devices that had been used. They continued to lead a discussion about what their classmates thought of the poem, which brought out a number of insightful comments, and ended with a slide on their Works Cited as everyone applauded their efforts. In some ways, this was a routine class at Stoneleigh-Burnham. But there was one important difference. Rachel is a sophomore, while Anna and Chelsea are 7th graders. This presentation was part of a project on which students from Alex Bogel's Sophomore Honors English class and Bill Ivey's Humanities 7 class collaborated.
The two teachers created nine groups, each one with one sophomore and either one or two 7th graders. In the spirit of honoring student voice, each group began by choosing their own poem to analyze together. They continued over two more class periods to discuss their individual ideas about what the poem meant, to identify its themes and devices and to learn something about the poet. They discussed and agreed upon how they would share the poem with and teach it to the class, and polished their presentations. The first groups presented on Wednesday, April 27, and additional groups will make their presentations next Monday and Wednesday (the order having been determined by a random method invented by the Sophomores called "color wheel"). The assessment sheet, designed together by both classes, focuses on confidence, presentation skills such as eye contact, expressiveness and clarity of speech, knowledge and familiarity of the text, inclusiveness, and "being interesting."
At one point in the discussion, a 7th grader referred to a time back "when I was little.." closely followed by a Sophomore who talked about "slipping into adulthood." On one level, the comments illuminate the difference in ages and focus between the two age groups (one moving more actively away from childhood even as the other focuses more strongly on moving toward adulthood), but then on another level they show what all the students have in common. Indeed, the buzz of conversation throughout class periods may be the strongest indication that all the students were comfortable with each other and treating each other as equal partners. Alex and Bill are very much hoping to continue collaborations like this one in the future. |
