Volume 7: Issue 13

Theatre 7
Theatre 7 is doing fabulous work towards bringing together their three original plays for performance on May 20th for the Middle School Performing Arts evening.  Sharon Weyers, who is a wonderful costumer - and director - in her many other lives, has been helping the students conceive their costumes.  Final touches on scripts have continued, casting is done and lines are being committed to memory.  The Theatre segment will take place in Geissler Gallery.

Day parents do take note! There will be a final dress rehearsal on the evening of Thursday the 19th after dinner so that students can work with stage lighting.  It should end by 8:30 p.m.
Algebra 1
As the eighth grade nears moving up, the class is working on using their academic and algebraic skills to prepare for math in the Upper School.  We are completing a unit on graphing, and we are about to begin working with the Pythagorean Theorem. Both of these topics will prepare them for their work in geometry.  They are also working on the applications of the skills we are studying in class.  For example, the class is working on how to graph and interpret data.  Through this application, there is a strong connection between math and science class as they analyze graphs of energy use.
Instrumental Music
The Middle School instrumental class is gearing up for their performance on Friday, May 20th (7 p.m.). The beginners and advanced players have made good progress this year. We will perform four pieces. Two will be large ensemble pieces, and the other will be smaller groups. If you want to know what the pieces are, please come to the show. It has been a lot of fun to work with all of them this year and I hope to see them continue with their instruments next year. Some of the highlights from the class this year have been Clara's piano playing at the beginning of class, Maah's drumming, Jordyn's multi-instrumental playing, having a euphonium player (Claire), two cellos laying down the low parts, Piper's bass lines on the piano, Yasmin's high D, the Mexican/Russian trombone section, the entire sax section, a wall of guitars and pianos, and the auxiliary percussionists. Come to the show and check them out!!
Dance 8
The Dance 8 group is ready for their spring performances! Class time has been spent polishing their Bollywood/Bhangra dance moves, working to move together as a unit, discussing and selecting appropriate costumes for this dance style and spacing the work on the stage.  They performed the work Saturday, May 7th at 4:00 p.m. during the Community Dance Concert, Friday, and will present it again May 20th at 7:30 p.m. for the MS Performing Arts Presentation and Thursday June 2nd at 7:00 p.m. as part of the End of the Year Dance Concert. Their dance is lively and spirited, and we couldn't be more pleased with their efforts in dance class this spring.
Humanities 7

Humanities 7 students did a wonderful job in their poetry presentations with Mr.Bogel's Sophomore Honors class. Besides sharing the work effectively with each other and their older student-partners, they also participated frequently and thoughtfully in student-led discussions. Indeed, more times than I can count, Mr. Bogel and I caught each other's eyes and nodded slightly to confirm a particularly insightful statement. After the last presentation, several students asked if we could do something else together. The 7th graders asked long ago if some of them could read independent writing to the older students, and that is a possibility.

Meanwhile, as the students have just turned in a major essay, we have regrouped and figured out how best to end the year. Because so much time was given to the poetry project and essay prep, we decided to have just one more unit and build in more full-class work this time. The theme question is "Which is more important, personal liberty or personal safety?" and we will be covering at a minimum the Constitution, Islam, bin Laden, and our country's relations with Pakistan. Two more essays are due by the end of the year. This class is well on track to being quite well prepared for Humanities 8 and beyond.

Foundations of Language and Culture

Foundations of Language and Culture students are finishing up their final language units of the year, with final demonstrations of learning on Monday. Students have been enjoying writing prompts, designed to get them thinking about the upcoming project wherein they invent an original language along with a country and culture where that language is spoken. Some students have already begun inventing vocabulary, writing systems, and even one alien culture with a long and rich history.

MOCA and Founders' Day

MOCA has been hard at work planning the many events that take place in May. Founders' Day, held last Thursday, May 5, was a success. This was due in part to the students' planning and in part to their good spirits and flexibility as we adjusted to the cold, blustery weather. We spent the morning sharing breakfast, watching a movie (they voted for "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"), and tie-dying t-shirts. Lunch was tasty even if the wind kept blowing out the grill and Mr. Deason had to relight it multiple times. Some students really wanted to go back inside after lunch, while others wanted to play Capture the Flag despite the chill. We were able to accommodate everyone's needs, and had an enjoyable day.

Spearth Day

Plans are just about completed for the Middle School booth on Spearth Day, to be held this year on Thursday, May 12. The students decided to do a photo booth and also offer slushies. All money raised will go to a cause determined by Student Council. The full day begins with Little Sisters taking Big Sisters out for breakfast (the morning shuttle will leave 30 minutes early). The entire school spends the morning on various projects connected to Earth Day, we have a BBQ lunch, there is a talent show, we have an all-school picture, and everyone plays in a gigantic Capture the Flag game. The booths round out the day. It promises to be fun!
