Wrapping up the 2010-2011 School Year

As we send out this issue of the Snapshot, we can hardly believe that June is around the corner and we will graduate a wonderful new group of "Owls for Life."  I know I speak for all of us here at SBS when I thank you for your part in the multitude of successes we have experienced since September.  Congratulations to everyone on a terrific year!

The Class of 2011!

Our seniors will be going to colleges and universities around the country or taking a year break before they embark on further education. The Class of 2011 has made amazing contributions at our School and have exciting paths laid before them.

Some of our grads are are making bold choices in terms of locations and programs. They are heading to Florida, Connecticut, South Carolina, Virginia, New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Illinois, Maine, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
World-Renowned Human Rights Advocate to Deliver Commencement Address
Karen Tse, a world-renowned advocate for human rights and founder and CEO of International Bridges to Justice, will deliver our 142nd Commencement Address this year!

We are thrilled to welcome her to our campus. Her incredible career and dedication to international human rights reflects the mission of our School, especially as we look forward to our first year as an International Baccalaureate World School. We believe the work of International Bridges to Justice will resonate with our graduates as they leave the safe harbor of our School to take on new challenges in college and beyond.

As a United Nations Judicial Mentor in the 1990s, Tse trained judges and prosecutors, and established the first arraignment court in Cambodia. After witnessing thousands of prisoners of all ages being held without trials, Tse founded International Bridges to Justice (IBJ) in 2000 to promote systemic global change in the administration of criminal justice. In the early years of IBJ she negotiated groundbreaking measures in judicial reform with the Chinese, Vietnamese and Cambodian governments. Since then her organization has expanded programming to twenty-four countries including Rwanda, Burundi and India. IBJ is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization with a vision to end torture and ensure due process rights in the twenty-first century through the just implementation of criminal laws.

Tse is a graduate of UCLA Law School and Harvard Divinity School. She was named by U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s Best Leaders in 2007. She has been recognized by the Skoll Foundation, Ashoka and Echoing Green as a leading social entrepreneur. Tse received the 2008 Harvard Divinity School’s First Decade Award and the 2008 American Bar Association’s International Human Rights Award.  To learn more about International Bridges to Justice, visit www.ibj.org.

Request from the International Office
We occasionally receive requests from families for year-long homestays for international students. In effect, they become day students while attending Stoneleigh-Burnham School.

Typically, the international family pays day student tuition and fees to SBS and pays a specified amount to the homestay family, which can be utilized by the host family in any way it prefers. We have done this in the past and it has worked very well. In fact, we have one possible request now. If anyone would like to discuss the opportunity of hosting an international student for the 2011-2012 year, please let me know. I would be happy to discuss the possibilities with you!
