Welcome Back!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2011-2012 academic year and to the first edition of the Snapshot for Fall 2011! Faculty and Staff have spent the past week together, preparing for the year and are looking forward to greeting you and your daughters on one of our Orientation Days next week.

For those of you new to the school, the Snapshot is our electronic parent newsletter and comes out every other week. If there is another email address you would prefer we use, please contact communications@sbschool.org to request a change or an addition (grandparents may like to hear from us as well!). We will appreciate any feedback throughout the year if you have thoughts about how we might best inform you.

This edition will be relatively simple and straightforward, focusing on information you need just to start the year. All things bode well for another wonderful year ahead, and we are anxious to have you all back on campus again.

We’ll see you next week!

Parent Meetings During Registration

Please note that each day of orientation includes a meeting with Sally Mixsell to hear news of the School, as well as several other administrators you will come into contact over the course of the year. Immediately following that meeting will be a parent reception, affording an opportunity to interact informally with each other and members of the faculty and administration. We hope you will make a point to attend both events!

Hurricane Irene and Travel Limitations

As most of you may already know, the path of Hurricane Irene headed straight for Western Massachusetts last Sunday, and there is considerable damage from flooding of area rivers, especially the Deerfield River.

Fortunately, we at Stoneleigh-Burnham were spared any real damage. However, as we put together this edition of the Snapshot, Route 91 SOUTH is closed between Greenfield (Exit 26) and Sunderland/Deerfield (Exit 24). Route 91 NORTH remains open.

In addition, Route 2 West is closed between Savoy and Florida, making it a roundabout trip from Charlemont to North Adams.  An alternative route is Rte. 112 South from Shelburne/Buckland to Route 116 to Plainfield, then Rt. 8 North to North Adams. A section of Rte. 112 North in Colrain is closed with a detour.

The towns of Hawley, Heath, Florida, Colrain, Shelburne Falls and Savoy have all received extensive damage with road washouts and bridge compromises.

Below is a link to a map which has the most up to date information regarding road closures. Please be sure to plan an alternate route to SBS in the event that any of the roads you might normally take are impassable.

Of Interest to SBS Riders

Since the departure of instructor Steph Perry this summer, we have been working to reconfigure the staffing in our Equestrian Center. Our hope is to incorporate a “public face” for the programs with someone who will instruct but will also be available to take our riders to off-campus shows outside of the IEA. We anticipate that this person will build the strategic vision for the program and help to attract strong riders to the school. To this end, we have decided to create a new position, Director of the Equestrian Center, and have been interviewing candidates. Mina Williams will continue as Director of Riding and will remain the trainer for our IEA Team.

We will be including many of our riders in the interview process and anticipate that they will be excited by this change. Until this position is filled, our very popular Community Riding instructor, Gwen Maynard, will be joining our regular riding staff.

Athletic Trainer and Director of Summer Programs, Matt Fisher, will also be moving part-time to the Barn in order to fulfill a new role as Campus Liaison to the Equestrian Center. Matt will be working with our Admissions, Communications and Development Offices in order to maintain stronger communication between the Barn and these offices. Matt will be in the Barn most mornings, except when he is representing the school and summer programs at fairs and information sessions.
