Languages

The study of language offers a sense of a relevant past, both cultural and linguistic. It helps expand one's view of the world and encourages critical reflection on the relation of language and culture, language and thought. It fosters an understanding of the interrelation of language and human nature and contributes to cultural awareness and literacy. In addition, studying vocabulary and grammar of another language reinforces understanding of English grammar.

Language offerings include:

Foundations in Language and Culture

Chinese

Spanish

French

Our goal is not only for our students to gain proficiency in another language, but also for them to continue language learning beyond the secondary level through college courses and international travel.

Language study at Stoneleigh-Burnham begins in middle school and continues through the AP level. Each level emphasizes the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Small class size guarantees personal attention from experienced language faculty who have worked and studied abroad. Student travel options are available, including immersion and home stay.

Students and faculty work closely with the Coordinator of Academic Technology to incorporate technology into the curriculum. Computer labs equipped with software for listening, recording, and interactive online activities enhance the study of languages.

2 years of the same language required, 3 years recommended
