The History Department strives to educate students at Stoneleigh-Burnham School about the events of the past, and how those events have impacted the world in which they live. Through readings, class discussions, writing assignments, and a consideration of current events, our students are asked to challenge themselves to look beyond the facts, considering context and point of view and making connections to previous areas of study and current global issues. Further, the department highly values educating students about women in history, with consideration to their contributions, as well as the reasons behind their absence from traditional historiography. By educating our students about women who have used their voices to advocate for social change, raise substantive questions, and push the limits of social norms, it is our hope that our young women will recognize and realize the same potential within themselves.
