IB English – Year Two (Higher Level & Standard Level)

Two of the four units required by the International Baccalaureate (IB) and their major assessments will be covered in year two of this two-year course. It is expected that all students in this course will prepare for and take the final IB exams in May: Paper One and Paper Two. The first unit, “Detailed Study,” will cover several genres in detail, such as drama, nonfiction, and poetry, and the second unit, “Genre Study,” focuses on in-depth study of a single genre. Students will continue to write personal responses, formal analyses, and creative assignments. They will also give a formal oral commentary, as required by the IB. Students will concentrate their efforts on writing and the writing process: from discovering and developing an original topic to drafting, revising, and producing a polished final paper.

At the Higher Level students read more texts, complete longer and more complex assignments, have more rigorous assessment standards, and are expected to challenge themselves with a higher level of independent and critical thought.

* International Baccalaureate courses are two years in length, taken during a student’s 11th and 12th grade years.
