International Debate Team Announced

Sophie Hathaway

Sophie Hathaway

The Stoneleigh-Burnham School (SBS) International Debate Team was announced during Housemeeting on Friday, April 15. Sophie Hathaway ’18, Victoria Subritzky Katz ’17, and Julia Thayer ’18 will compete at the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition (IISPSC) in Vancouver next October. More than 150 speakers from many countries will compete.

The competition is held each year in Canada. Last year, the IISPSC was held in Toronto, and the SBS team of Claire Lane ’16, Clara Swartzentruber ’16, and Charlotte Minsky ’16 placed first among U.S. schools. In addition, Claire was the top speaker in Dramatic Interpretation, which allowed her to join Clara on the U.S. team at the World Debating and Public Speaking Championship, held in March 2016 in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Paul Bassett, head coach of the SBS Debate and Public Speaking Society, said that SBS has done well at IISPSC over the years, but, before 2015, the last time SBS earned Top U.S. Team was in 1993 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Congratulations, Sophie, Victoria, and Julia!
