On Sunday, April 2, the Stoneleigh-Burnham Debate and Public Speaking Society team won first place at a public speaking tournament held at Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH).
At Housemeeting on Tuesday, April 4, Head Coach Dr. Paul Bassett noted how proud he was of the team that competed at NMH against seven other schools. He noted that the team was made up of five of the Society’s less experienced members, including some students for whom this was their first official competition.
“This is your first place team!” he said, recognizing Francelyse (Frannie) Joseph ’18, Miles DeClue ’18, Jacqueline (Jax) Morgan ’19, Annalie Gilbert Keith ’18, and Nes Mager ’20.
Morgan took first place in Interpretive Reading, and de Clue took third in that category. Morgan also took third in After Dinner Speeches. Dr. Bassett said several other members of the team had high scores, and in some cases their individual best scores to date, in various categories.
