XC Shows Strong Teamwork at First Race of the Year

Five runners for the Varsity Cross Country

Five runners for the Varsity Cross Country team warm-up before their first race of the season at BART.

The Varsity Cross Country team competed in the first RVAL (River Valley Athletic League) race of the year at Berkshire Art & Technical Charter School in Adams, MA. The young team faced competition from four additional schools and placed 4th out of the five teams.

Head Coach Andrea Tehan Carnes reported that at the last minute, one of the five girls scheduled to race was forced to drop from the race due to a knee injury. Needing 5 competitors to score in a meet, Andrea and Assistant Coach Tim McCall asked the other teammates not scheduled to run if anyone would want to participate so that Stoneleigh-Burnham could score. “We did not want to pressure them, but new student and new runner Ye Eun Kim stepped in for her teammate and was very happy to help out our team. Talk about a team player! She had to borrow shorts and sneakers from a teammate as she was not scheduled to run, but she happily changed and warmed up with the other four girls.”

This was the first race ever for three of the five Stoneleigh-Burnham runners. Coach Carnes continued, “Tim and I were both very impressed. There is room for improvement, but it’s still very early in the season.”

The results of the match were:
1st place: BART with 44 points
2nd place: Academy at Charlemont with 45 points
3rd place: Dublin with 58 points
4th place: Stoneleigh-Burnham with 86 points
Incomplete: White Oak
